Breaking the jinx, Kolkata Knight Riders cruised to their first victory at Wankhede in 12 years, beating Mumbai Indians by 24 runs in the 51st match of the ongoing Indian Premier League on Friday. Since 2012, KKR have never been able to win at Wankhede but an all-round magic helped the side pin down struggling Mumbai. Mighty Mitchell Starc starred with the ball, emerging with a match-winning 19th over, featuring three wickets of dangerous Tim David, Piyush Chawla and Gerald Coetzee, thus bowling out MI for 145 in (18.5) overs.

Asked to bat, KKR put up a respectable total of 169 on the back of Venkatesh Iyer clubbing 70 off 52 to steady the innings after top-order batters Phil Salt, Sunil Narine and Shreyas Iyer departed for low scores. Impact player Manish Pandey’s (43) contribution was immense, coming together with Venkatesh to put on 83 off 62 balls.

Chasing the target, Mumbai Indians got off to a shaky start after Starc dismissed Ishan Kishan early on. Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir were claimed by Sunil Narine and Varun Chakarvarthy in quick succession, putting Mumbai Indians in a dangerous situation. Suryakumar Yadav resuscitated MI’s chase, smashing 56 off 35, however Nehal Wadhera, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya couldn’t manage to stay to take the team across the line.
