“There’s no reason why it…” Ricky Ponting speaks on ‘Impact Player’

Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting has given his take on the ‘Impact Player’ rule after Rohit Sharma expressed his concern over this a couple of days back. Ponting said it’s not ideal, however if it entertains spectators then it is good. ‘Impact Player Rule’ was introduced into the IPL last year, giving the teams an advantage to pick the 12th players at any moment in the game depending on the situation.

Initially, it was thought to be a tactical move, garnering support from players and coaches, however in recent times this rule has come under huge scrutiny, with players and coaches voicing their opinion.

“I read some really interesting answers from Rohit Sharma on this yesterday. This Impact Player (rule) is taking the all-rounders out of the game a little bit,” Ponting said while speaking to reporters.

“You know you can play your specialists. You can play a specialist batsman down to No.8, and then you can bring a bowler in the second innings when you bowl. He (Rohit) made examples of Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar. I think for a coach and for the players, it’s probably not ideal, but I think what this game tries to do is entertain people,” he said.

“The T20 game is an entertainment package and I think it’s probably better to ask the spectators what they think about the Impact Player because if everyone is loving the fact that teams are making 220 to 250 in a lot of games, it should stay. But if the spectators aren’t liking it as much, there’s no reason why it couldn’t go back to just 11 vs 11,” he said.
