“Would be a big mistake”: Michael Vaughan’s warning to team India

The high-profile five-match Test series between India and England is generating a lot of excitement with both teams being equally dominant in the red-ball cricket. Heading into the series, India are carrying a significant home advantage, especially with the spinners as pitches in India tend to aid the spinners.

England, on the other hand, will also be entering the series with heavily talented spinners, making it a formidable clash. England will have the likes of Jack Leach along with some new faces. India’s spin attack will consist of veterans Ravichandaran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who both have given challenging times to England batters on previous occasions. Ahead of the series, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has said that India should refrain from creating overly spin-friendly pitches.

“For India, I think it would be a big mistake if the pitches spin hugely from ball one of the series. England are going to look to score quickly and will, even if their innings do not last long,” Vaughan wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

“But spinning pitches bring Jack Leach and the young spinners England have selected into the game. Is Leach a better spinner than Jadeja? No. But if you give him a turning pitch, and England bat first, he will be right in the game.”

“Equally, when the ball spins big, I think India’s batting can be vulnerable, and England will bowl them out. If the pitches are flatter. India will score thousands, and also have the bowlers to work England out.”
