Team India have been handed down the five-run penalty after veteran Ravichandran Ashwin sprinted on the protected area of the field on day two of the ongoing third Test match between India and England in Rajkot.

The penalty runs came as a reward for England who will start their first innings with the five runs on board. Earlier, on day one, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja had already been warned by the umpire not to run on the protected area of the pitch.

India were penalised in the 102nd over in India’s first innings when Ashwin nudged the ball towards cover and stormed out for a single before being sent by debutant Dhruv Jurel. On-field Umpire Joel Wilson talked to Ashwin before signalling the penalty.

According to law 41.14., which refers to the damage to the pitch, stated “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”
