Gujarat Titans’ head coach Gary Kirsten on Shubman Gill as captain

Having led the team for two seasons, allrounder Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians as he is set to lead five-time champions at the IPL 2024, replacing Rohit Sharma. At Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya led the team to their inaugural title victory in 2022, and they remained runner-up in 2023 after suffering defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the final.
Ahead of the IPL 2024, young Shubman Gill succeeded Hardik Pandya, taking the reins. Gill was confirmed Gujarat Titans’ skipper few days after Hardik Pandya made his move too Mumbai Indians. Speaking on Gill’s leadership, GT’s coach Gary Kirsten said he is leading the team appropriately.
“I think the leadership is going to be an important role for him and I know he's really keen to do the job and we, as coaches, just need to assist him in making sure he's getting the best out of his players, and he's leading the team appropriately and in the way we want him to lead," Kirsten said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Possessing no prior leadership experience, Gill is a novice when it comes to leadership, and Gary Kirsten believes Gill will be coming across challenges but he will be supported along the way.
“He's a quality player. He's a thoroughly nice person. He's got massive motivation and determination as an individual, which we've seen when playing for India. But like any new leader, he's starting from scratch, and he's going to be met with challenges along the way and we, as coaches, will just have to assist him along the way," Kirsten added.
