IPL 2024: ‘Smart Replay System’ to be introduced for precise and quicker decisions

Indian Premier League (IPL) has been gaining extraordinary popularity since its inception way back in 2008. World’s biggest cricketing league has witnessed enormous evolution over the years. Its 17th edition, Starting on 22nd March, will see the introduction of new rule, ‘Smart Replay System’.
This rule is destined to boost the accuracy and speed of TV Umpires’s decision. As per ESPNcricinfo, TV umpires will directly acquire the inputs from the Hawk-eye operators who will be stationed in the same room as umpires. According to this rule, The TV broadcast director, who used to serve as a conduit between the third umpire and the hawk-eye operators up until now, will no longer be required. Hawk-eye operators will provide the umpires with images obtained from the eight hi-speed cameras installed across the ground.
The Smart Replay System will arm the umpires to have more visuals, including split-screen images, to clearly determine the outcome. The new rule will also assist umpires have clear visuals from different angles to make the decisions about the coaches near boundary, caught behind, stumping and grassing the difficult catches.
