Shamsi's decisive spell seals South Africa a thrilling win

Tabraiz Shamsi’s decisive spell, pitching in with four wickets helped South Africa narrowly seal a one-run victory over Nepal in the final group D match of the ongoing T20I World Cup 2024 on Saturday at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent. Nepal fell short by one from recording a historic victory against South Africa. With the heartbreaking defeat, Nepal were knocked out of the tournament. On the other hand, South Africa finished the group stage with four victories in a row.
After asking South Africa to bat, Nepal spinners came hard on proteas with their comprehensive spells. Their bowling attack was further boosted by the return of Sandeep Lamichhane, who returned with the economical figures of 18 from four overs. Kushal Bhurtel took four wickets while Dipender Singh snared three wickets to restrict South Africa to 115/7 in 20 overs. Reeza Hendricks scored most for South Africa, scoring 43 off 49 as his struggle against Nepal’s bowling attack was palpable. Even the likes of Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen struggled to find their rhythm.
Shamsi, who was brought in for Keshav Maharaj, turned the game around with his double-wicket 18th over, claiming the wicket of Aasif Sheikh (42 off 49), who was leading Nepal’s chase. The equation went down to two off two, but Ottneil Baartman held his nerve to bowl two dot balls, denying Nepal a thrilling win.
