Charith Asalanka underscores team’s positives after monumental win over India

Sri Lanka’s interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya was extremely ecstatic the moment Sri Lanka sealed the ODI series victory against India, winning the third game by huge margin of 110 runs. For the first time in 27 years, Sri Lanka raced to a historic ODI series victory against India.

Sri Lanka made their strong comeback after being stifled to a series whitewash in the preceding three-match T20I series. They excelled in all departments in the ODI series, not allowing India to dominate like they did in T20Is.

In the third ODI, Dunith Wellalage took five wickets and Avishka Fernando pummeled 96 runs to help Sri Lanka break the long-standing record. India, on the other hand, found it super challenging to even fight back. Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka underlined team’s positives after their record-breaking victory.

"The biggest positive was winning a series against India after 27 years. The other positives were the spinners. We had relied on Wanindu Hasaranga, but we've had [Jeffrey] Vandersay and Dunith [Wellalage] playing well here too. Also the top order batted well through the series. On difficult pitches like this, that's a big plus point,” Charith Asalanka said.

"As a team we tried to create a good environment, after talking to the coach. We tried to give a lot of freedom to our players and to show their talent. We don't put much pressure on them. We identify what the positives and negatives are and we back their strength. If they fail it's not a problem. If you have that backing you can play against a good team like this. In the T20s though we lost there were positives in our top order. I knew as a captain that when we play to our potential, we can compete against the best,” he said.
