With Joe Root playing an enthralling knock of 143 on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday, England started the second Test match against Sri Lanka in commanding fashion, finishing the opening day at 358/7. A solid top-order performance, highlighted by Joe Root's virtuoso performance, smashing his 33rd Test century to lead England’s fightback, laid the foundation for England to dictate terms. Root was the standout performer, anchoring the innings with a sublime 143.

Root's innings came at a crucial time, with England needing a stabilising presence after a few early breakthroughs by Sri Lanka.  At lunch, England were left reeling at 97/3. Root, meanwhile, stood firm to guide England through tough times.

Complementing Root's effort was Gus Atkinson, who showed remarkable resilience and skill, remaining unbeaten on 74 on day one.  He joined Root at a time when England needed to rebuild and played his part, forming a 92-run partnership.

The day, however, wasn't entirely smooth sailing for England. Sri Lanka’s bowlers also managed to keep the pressure on, picking up wickets at regular intervals. As England look ahead to day two, they will be keen to add to their total and put themselves in a commanding position.
