Aaliyah Alleyne, Chamari Athapaththu help Barbados Royals defend WCPL title

Chasing a modest 93-run total, Barbados Royals delivered a pulsating performance against Trinbago Knight Riders in the final of Women’s Caribbean Premier League on Friday to successfully defend their title. Barbados Royals defeated Trinbago Knight Riders by four wickets in the final to seal back-to-back titles.
In the final showdown, Barbados Royals, after asking Knight Riders to bat, limited them to 93/8 in 20 overs, with Aaliyah Alleyne and skipper Hayley Mathews returning with four and two wickets each respectively. For Knight Riders, their innings got off to a shaky start as they lost early wickets. Barbados bowlers applied immense pressure, restricting Riders’ top order. With the efforts of Shikha Pandey and Jannillea Glasgow scoring 28 and 24 respectively, Knight Riders managed to post a modest total of 93/8.
In response, Barbados Royals suffered an early blow with the wicket of captain Hayley Matthews, but Chamari Athapaththu stood up to the challenge blazing 39 unbeaten, including seven boundaries, to lead the side to their title win. Barbados Royals went past the target in only 15 overs, scoring 94 for the loss of six wickets. The contest seemed to be going down to the wire, but Chamari Athapathathu remained firm to ensure team’s title win.
