“They would have told Ashwin to retire”: Former England player’s dig at England cricket

In the recently concluded first Test match between India and Bangladesh, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his remarkable skills, dismantling Bangladesh's batting order with a masterclass in spin bowling. Ashwin’s performance was one of the key factors in India’s 280-run win, as he took crucial wickets and smashed 113 runs. His experience helped him exploit the weaknesses in Bangladesh's lineup.

Former England spinner Monty Panesar weighed in on Ashwin’s performance, taking a pointed dig at English cricket. He remarked that had Ashwin been part of the England team, he would have likely been urged to retire.

"They experiment more. If Ashwin was English right now, then they would have told him to retire because they want to bring youngsters who have the potential to play. But I think England experiments more, and they like to experiment," Panesar told ANI.

Monty Panesar also compared R Ashwin to Australian veteran Nathan Lyon by saying that Nathan Lyon is better bowler than Ashwin. However, Panesar emphasised that Ashwin is a better bowler in India.

"I think I see Nathan Lyon in my opinion. Yes, he is a better bowler. But I think Ashwin is a better bowler in India. I think he thinks like a batter when he bowls. He is able to pick out the weakness and he can exploit it, and that is his biggest advantage. He bats really well when he bowls; he knows what the batters are thinking," he said.
