Heinrich Klassen opens up about his shock international retirement

South Africa’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, renowned for his power-hitting skills, has opened up about his sudden retirement from international cricket on June 2. Klaasen’s retirement came as a shock given his enormous contribution to South Africa’s success in the white-ball format. Moreover, Klaasen’s decision to retire came days after he was overlooked for South Africa’s central contract.
“I felt for a long time that I didn’t really care about any of my performances and whether the team won or not. That’s the wrong place to be. I had a long conversation with Rob [Walter] before the Champions Trophy, and I told him I didn’t feel good in my heart about what was going on. I wasn’t enjoying it that much,” said Klaasen to Raport as quoted by Wisden.
“We talked nicely, we planned everything nicely up to and including the World Cup in 2027. So when he finished as coach and the [contract] negotiations [with CSA] didn’t go as planned, it made my decision a lot easier,” Klaasen said.
Klaasen was the top run-getter for South Africa at the T20I World Cup 2024. He also played for South Africa at the Champions Trophy 2025. He represented South Africa in 60 ODIs, 58 T20Is and four Tests, scoring 2,141, 1000 and 104 runs.
