Michael Vaughan 'staggered' by England decision to bowl
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has strongly criticised current skipper Ben Stokes’ decision to bowl first in the opening Test against India at Headingley, Leeds. The bold move backfired spectacularly, with India seizing the upper hand on Day One after piling up an imposing 359/3 by stumps. India’s top order took full advantage of the flat pitch, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill slamming centuries.
"I'm a bit of an old-school traditionalist here at Leeds that, when the sun shines, it's quite an easy decision, particularly with the build-up to the Test match and it being so dry and so nice," Vaughan said on the BBC's Test Match Special as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
"I was staggered… when I heard he was going to bowl first. I thought, traditions have gone out the window.”
England now face an uphill task to claw back into the game. Their bowlers will need early wickets on Day Two, and the batting unit must be prepared for scoreboard pressure when their turn arrives. On the other hand, India’s Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal would aim to continue with their assault.
