“Pressure is mounting”: Ex-Indian cricketer on Gambhir amid India’s loss vs England

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed that there is mounting pressure on head coach Gautam Gambhir following India’s crushing defeat in the opening Test against England. Despite dominating much of the match on the back of scintillating centuries from Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul, India fell to a five-wicket loss, continuing a worrying trend in their recent red-ball performances.

“There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra asserted that there will be question marks if India’s five-match series against England doesn’t go well.

“Because the selectors will feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if that is the case, you need to deliver the results. Period. There are no excuses,” Chopra said.

Meanwhile, the second Test between both sides will begin on July 2 at Edgbaston.
