Injury concerns hit India, England on day one at Lord’s
The second Test between India and England got off to a dramatic start at Lord’s on Thursday as both sides suffered notable injury setbacks on Day One. England captain Ben Stokes appeared to be in visible discomfort while batting late in the day. The talismanic all-rounder seemed to suffer a groin injury and was seen hobbling between the wickets.
Meanwhile, India also faced a setback as wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been in outstanding form, was struck on his index finger, forcing him to leave the field. The incident occurred when Pant was stopping a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Following Pant’s departure from the field, India called substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. Later, Indian allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was asked about Pant’s injury, and he said that nothing is known yet.
“To be honest, I just came out of the field and I do not know anything about it, but since I didn’t hear anything from anyone, We'll get to know tomorrow morning before we go back,” Reddy said during the press conference.
Offering an update on Stokes’ injury, batter vice-captain Ollie Pope expressed optimism.
"Fingers crossed he can do something magic and come back strong. I've not seen him since, so fingers crossed there's nothing too serious. But clearly we've got a big Test over the next four days and we've got a big two coming up as well, so it is important to try and manage him. We’ll see how he pulls up tomorrow,” Pope said while talking to reporters.
England closed on 251-4 on day one of the third Test against India after electing to bat. Joe Root and Ben Stokes are unbeaten on 99 and 39, respectively.
