Sri Lanka came out victorious against Afghanistan on Thursday, 18 September, at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, securing a coveted berth in the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup tournament. Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six wickets to wrap up the proceedings in 18.4 overs, chasing a target of 170. Their victory also helped Bangladesh progress to Super Four from Group B.

Deciding to bat after winning the toss, Afghanistan posted 169 for 8 in 20 overs. Their scoring was largely led by Mohammad Nabi, who unleashed a savage assault on the Sri Lankan bowler Dunith Wellalage. He played a stunning cameo, smoking 60 off 22 balls, which included five sixes in the final over bowled by Dunith Wellalage. It was a late flourish that revived Afghanistan’s innings. Rashid Khan added a useful 24 off 23 balls, helping set something for Afghanistan.

For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Thushara was exceptional with the ball, returning with 4 wickets for 18 runs in his 4 overs. He was instrumental in dismantling Afghanistan's top and middle order, removing both openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediquallah Atal. Even Dasun Shanaka, Dushmantha Chameera, and Dunith Wellalage claimed one wicket each.

Meanwhile, chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost two early wickets in the powerplay in the form of dangerous Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara. However, Kusal Mendis played a key role, anchoring the chase. He remained unbeaten on 74 off 52 balls, hammering 10 boundaries. He was assisted by Kusal Perera (28) to put Sri Lanka back in the game. Down the order, Kamindu Mendis slammed 26 off 13 to take Sri Lanka over the line.
