"After six overs if he wants to bat...": Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya lauds Indian star Abhishek Sharma

In the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, India's young left-handed power hitter Abhishek Sharma has turned heads with a series of stunning performances at the top of the order, delivering explosive starts that have been instrumental in India's dominance in the tournament. Abhishek’s approach has been fearless, having made his intent clear from India's very first match in the tournament. Following his quick-fire starts, he is currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Amid the explosive outings, Sri Lankan legend and the incumbent head of the side, Sanath Jayasuriya, has lauded the youngster’s performance.
“He is playing his natural game, and they (team management) have encouraged him to play his natural game. That's the key because if someone is playing his natural game, we need to encourage him to continue doing so," Jayasuriya said during the post-match media interaction.
Sanath Jayasuriya also hailed Abhishek's game awareness, saying he knows when to attack and when to slow down.
“Whenever he wants to slow down a bit, he knows how to slow down. So, after six overs, if he wants to bat for a longer period, he is doing that. Day by day he is scoring more runs and batting really well."
India's team management, too, has backed Abhishek fully, allowing him to play his natural game at the top. Jayasuriya felt that management's backing is the key.
“I think the good thing is the coaching staff has given him the freedom to play his natural game. That’s the key."
