"Becomes slightly wayward": Former Indian cricketer's sharp take on Bumrah's performance in 2nd T20I

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has offered his assessment of Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s performance during the second T20I against Australia on Friday. Although Bumrah ended the match with decent bowling figures of 2/26, Uthappa believed the star pacer appeared slightly “wayward” early in his spell, as he seemed too eager to pick up wickets.

"I have observed that whenever Bumrah gets desperate to pick up wickets, he becomes slightly wayward, and when he is disciplined and hits a good line and length, he mostly picks up wickets. Australia took full advantage of that waywardness at the start, the way we started with the ball in the second innings,” Uthappa said on Star Sports.

India, after being bowled out for just 125, were heavily reliant on Bumrah to make early inroads and keep the contest alive. However, Bumrah failed to strike in his first three overs. His two wickets eventually came in the final over of his spell, by which time Australia were on the brink of victory.

"When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward,” he added.
