“Look at Virat Kohli”: former England legend on Kane Williamson’s poor form

Following an early exit from the ongoing T20I World Cup 2024 after a tremendously disappointing campaign, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson stepped down from captaincy and also declined New Zealand's central contract to explore more overseas opportunities. It was quite unthinkable the way New Zealand performed, with all of their enormously talented players failing to deliver.
Williamson, a high-class batter, too had to face upsetting times, scoring only 28 runs with a below par strike rate. For a long time, Williamson has been struggling to ramp up his strike rate in the shortest format of the game, but still his struggle was visible at the World Cup as well. Speaking on Williamson's poor strike rate, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan said Williamson can never play at a higher strike rate and also suggested that Williamson should draw inspiration from Virat Kohli to shoot up his strike rate.
“I don’t think he is ever going to be a player that strikes at 200. But look at Virat Kohli in this year’s IPL, he went from Virat in previous years to suddenly Virat Kohli the modern 2024 player by going for it and being expensive, particularly against the spin, found a couple of lap slog shots which was tremendous to see. And maybe Kane needs to have a look at Virat and see if he can up his tempo by around 15%,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
“If he can get to 140-150 strike rate and be the glue for New Zealand or whatever franchise cricket team he plays for, he is an absolute in every team because you know he is going to be consistent and there or thereabouts scoring runs. He just needs to up that strike rate by just 15-20% and he'll be scoring consistent runs. I think we've still got a bit of watching Kane Williamson in T20 cricket to do," he said.
