‘I’ll drop you if you register 21 ducks’: Sanju Samson opens up about Gautam Gambhir’s backing

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s much-anticipated return to T20I didn’t go quite as planned—at least at first after he endured a rocky start to the T20I series against Sri Lanka, registering two consecutive ducks. With back-to-back failures, Samson was left incredibly disappointed, but head coach Gautam Gambhir’s encouragement and backing to play with freedom helped him get back into his element. Recently, in a chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter’s podcast, Sanju Samson opened up about that shaky start and Gambhir's support.
“I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gauti bhai came up to me and said what had happened. I told him I got a chance, but I could not capitalise’. He said, ‘So what? I’ll drop you if you register 21 ducks’. That’s the word which he used. That kind of confidence from the captain and the coach has definitely raised my confidence. That really helped me to go out there and did what I did after that,” Samson said on R Ashwin’s “Kutti Stories” on YouTube
Following those encouraging words, Sanju Samson went on to deliver impressive performances, including a breathtaking knock of 111 off 47 balls against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, marking his first T20I century. In the very next outing, Samson became the first Indian ever to score back-to-back T20I centuries, belting 107 off 50 balls against South Africa in Durban.
