ICC to expands Women’s ODI World Cup to 10 teams for 2029

Following the resounding success of the 2025 edition of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the next Women’s ODI World Cup in 2029 will feature 10 teams, up from the traditional eight-team format. Historically, since the year 2000, only eight teams have featured in the main tournament of the Women’s ODI World Cup.
“The ICC re-affirmed its commitment to the growth of Women’s Cricket and heralded the success of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India as testament to its long-standing faith in the Women’s game. Nearly 300,000 fans watched the event in stadia breaking the record for tournament attendance for any women’s Cricket event. The tournament also witnessed viewership growth and new records being set for on-screen audiences across the world with nearly 500 million viewers in India. The ICC board, keen to build on the success of the event, agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams (from eight teams in 2025)," the ICC stated in its statement.
The final of the Women's World Cup 2025 drew huge attention, with India clinching their first ever women’s ODI World Cup title by beating South Africa by 52 runs. According to the official streaming partner JioHotstar, the final alone attracted 185 million users, equalling the viewership achieved by the men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final.
