“What people write is not in my hands”: Jasprit Bumrah slams his critics

The great Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has always managed to silence his critics expressing concerns surrounding his ability to consistently represent the Indian team. However, Bumrah has already broken the back of England’s batting lineup in the ongoing first Test in Leeds, snapping a five-wicket haul during day three of the first Test and helping India carry a 6-run lead. Meanwhile, for the England series, Bumrah made his return to Test cricket from a back injury suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and ahead of the England series, there were huge concerns about how he would be able to make his comeback from injury. But Bumrah's comeback has been strong, showing his effect on opponents with his strangling spell. When asked about how he feels about the things people write about him, Bumrah clearly stated he can't control what people think and write about him.
"Look, what people write is not in my hands, and I’m not trying to teach anyone or tell them, ‘Don’t write this about me; write that instead.’ Everybody is free to write whatever they want. Obviously, I understand cricket is very popular in our country. And sometimes, to make a headline, if my name gets mentioned, the viewership increases—so I do understand that. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter to me. Because if those things start getting into my head, I’ll start believing them. If someone else wants me to play in a certain way, I’m not that kind of person," Bumrah said during the press conference.
"I have always wanted to play for India. I played for India on my belief. I have played every format on my belief. I have always heard no from people. First they said you won't be able to play, then they said you will last only six months, then they said you will last only eight months, and just like that I have spent 10 years in international cricket listening to all this. I have played in the IPL for 12-13 years.
"Even now people say this is it. Keep waiting; I will not think about that. I will keep doing my work. Every three to four months there will be headlines, but let's see. I prepare my best and leave the rest to God.
Currently, India are leading by 96 runs, and they will resume their batting on day four with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill unbeaten on 47 and 6, respectively.
